Live and loaded: Finding the next big star!

First things first, let’s talk about what makes a live performance truly captivating. It’s not just about the music, although that’s obviously a major component. The performer engages with the audience, brings energy to the stage, and brings a unique flair to their performance. When scouting for talent through live performances, you want to keep an eye out for artists who can do all of these things and more. They should be able to grab the attention of the audience right from the start and keep them engaged throughout the entire show. This means not just playing their music, but also interacting with the crowd and putting on a visually interesting show.

How to Scout Live –

Firstly, check out some local live performances! You never know what diamond in the rough you might find. These events are perfect for emerging artists to show off their skills, and for you to discover new talent that hasn’t hit the mainstream yet. You will also have a greater chance of connecting with the artists if you can demonstrate your engagement with the scene they are operating within.

It can be a tough line to toe in some respects. You want to show an act you are engaged with, so of course turn up on time and stay for the whole performance, but you getting too involved in the show can come across as unprofessional. You don’t want to approach the band covered in sweat after dancing to their music for 90 minutes, you’ll seem like no more than a fan, or at least fan less of a serious option. Try and listen to projects they already have out before the show though, the music industry can get weighed down in professionalism, so being genuinely engaged and interested is what can give you the edge as an independent label approaching an artist.

Social media is the great ‘next step’. Follow local venues, promoters, and artists to stay up to date on upcoming shows and festivals. Building relationships with local promoters and booking agents is a smart move for independent record labels. They know what’s hot in the local music scene and can give you the lowdown on emerging artists. So, don’t be shy – introduce yourselves and get the scoop!

Scouting for talent through live performances is all about finding that special spark that sets an artist apart from the rest. It may not be the most streamlined way of doing things, in fact, it’s pretty clearly the least time and cost effective but when it comes to finding artists who can connect with their audience, put on a visually interesting show, and bring something truly unique to the table its hard to find another scouting method that compares. So, get out there and start exploring the vibrant world of live music!
