TikTok Music Expands… Without Universal

TikTok Music, the premium music streaming service, has now expanded its services to Australia, Singapore, and Mexico. Following its beta rollout in these markets in July, it’s officially open to the public. In Brazil and Indonesia, the music streaming service holds licenses from all three major record labels, including Sony Music, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. However, in the recent expansion, the service lacks Universal Music Group’s catalog.

TikTok aims to offer a complete music catalog to its users, and the company is actively discussing licensing with Universal Music Group. Still, this leaves many in the music industry questioning why TikTok didn’t wait until it secured all three major labels before its expansion.

Universal Music Group’s absence may be linked to ongoing negotiations about licensing its catalog to TikTok in the future. TikTok’s experiment in Australia earlier this year involved restricting users from using major label-licensed music in their videos, likely stemming from pressure to change its “buy-out” agreements with the majors.

TikTok Music’s premium-only subscription service offers a high-quality listening experience and aims to increase opportunities and revenue for artists and rights holders. It’s priced at AUD $8.99 per month for an individual premium account in Australia and offers family and student plans. In Singapore and Mexico, similar pricing structures are in place.

In this expansion, TikTok has added new music discovery features, including personalised collaborative listening and a music discovery personal assistant named ‘Tonik.’ Ole Obermann, Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok, sees the service as an exciting opportunity for both music fans and artists and expects it to bring significant value to the music industry.

TikTok Music offers a wide range of social music streaming features that connect the music app with the main TikTok short-form video platform, allowing users to sync their accounts and explore songs discovered on the app. New users get a one-month free trial, while beta users received a three-month trial of the subscription-only music service.
