Comedian Sarah Silverman is the lead plaintiff in a new lawsuit against OpenAI, creators of Chat GPT, that alleges the company’s AI technology violated copyright laws by training itself on Silverman’s book “The Bedwetter.”

Silverman is one of three book authors suing OpenAI in this case. The others are Christopher Golden, in relation to his book “Ararat,” and Richard Kadrey, in relation to his book “Sandman Slim,” the first volume in a series of the same name.

The lawsuit could have significant implications for the music industry, where concerns have been growing for some time that AI models could be violating the law by training on copyrighted material.

After the meteoric rise of AI artists appearing on Spotify, big concerns were raised over what the future of the meaning of copyright would be. This lawsuit seems to be offering a definitive answer moving forward on the subject, though the results may be a long time coming with the complaint filed on the 7th of July.
