Microsoft AI Chatbot Partner with Suno to Craft Songs

Microsoft’s AI-driven chatbot, Copilot, has found a musical partner in Suno, an AI music app. Through this collaboration, Copilot users can craft complete songs by entering simple text prompts. From pop adventures with family to any imaginative request, Suno, via a plug-in, transforms these prompts into songs featuring lyrics, instrumentals, and singing voices. Users, after enabling the Suno plug-in on Copilot’s website, can share their AI-generated tracks on social media.

Microsoft envisions this partnership, accessible at Copilot.Microsoft.com, as a gateway to unleash creativity and fun in music creation. Suno, however, has limitations for free users—monetization on platforms like YouTube or Spotify is prohibited, and the rights to songs created remain with Suno. Commercial rights are extended to paid subscribers.

This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader AI music research project, Muzic, focusing on deep learning and AI’s role in music understanding and generation. Within this venture, the team developed DeepRapper, a rap generator, and MuseCoCo, a text-to-symbolic music generator, exemplifying AI’s impact on music creation.

The trend of GenAI-driven music creation technology extends across the tech industry, with Google introducing Lyria and Dream Track. Meta, too, launched MusicGen, a text-to-music AI generator trained on a substantial music dataset.

Yet, ethical and legal challenges persist in the AI music domain. Suno, for instance, doesn’t disclose its AI training data sources, raising questions about transparency. While it claims to block specific prompts and prevents users from generating covers by uploading existing lyrics, the ethical considerations around AI algorithms learning from existing music without clear consent remain.

In this ever-evolving landscape, tech giants and startups continue to navigate the complexities of AI-synthesized music creation, seeking the right balance between innovation and ethical responsibility.
