Tomorrow will see the release of Meta and Instagrams answer to Twitter, Threads. A clear power grab following growing numbers of disgruntled Twitter users since Elon Musks $43 billion takeover and subsequent software changes.
The new app aims to “share ideas and trends with text.” The lack of any real USP within its software to separate it from Twitter, at least as currently presented by Meta, suggests they see a real opportunity to displace a large chunk of Twitter’s user base, which sits at well over 550 million.
With many musicians and creators already having significant followers on Instagram, the idea of joining a completely new platform suddenly becomes a much easier sell. Influencers will be able to transfer over their Instagram usernames from day one. The further implications that strong links to Facebook and Instagram, who each have over 4x the active user base as twitter already, could have for Threads in future is yet to be seen, but it stands it in good stead on paper.
This may be something for labels and artists alike to jump on quickly. This level of possibility for an immediate explosive user base is something never seen before in the world of social media. Getting in at the ground floor may lead to easy wins for a lucky few influencers who play the launch right.
You can pre-order Threads in the IOS app store now, with its release targeted for Tomorrow morning (July 6th).
