English Language Music Sees Global Popularity Shrink

Luminate’s mid-year report reveals a significant shift in the streaming landscape of the United States, with English language music experiencing a decline in its share of the Top 10,000 on-demand tracks, both in audio and video formats, during H1 2023. The data indicates a 4.2% decrease compared to the previous year.

Conversely, the Spanish language music segment has witnessed a notable surge in its streaming share of the Top 10,000 US on-demand tracks within the same time period. This category demonstrated a growth of 3.6%, showcasing its increasing popularity among listeners.

In H1 2023, English language music retained a dominant position in the US streaming market, claiming 88.3% of the Top 10,000 on-demand tracks. However, Spanish language music accounted for a 7.9% share, highlighting its steady presence in this metric.

Notably, the decline of English language music’s streaming share in the Top 10,000 tracks is not confined to the United States but has emerged as a global phenomenon. Luminate’s findings indicate a decrease in English language music’s share of the Top 10,000 on-demand tracks on streaming platforms worldwide, dropping from 67.2% in 2021 to 62.1% in 2022.

Moreover, the first half of 2023 witnessed a further decline in English language music’s global share of the Top 10,000 on-demand tracks, plummeting to 56.4%. These figures suggest an ongoing shift in consumer preferences towards a more diverse range of music choices that transcends linguistic boundaries.
