200 Independent Music Publishers Back Ethical AI Guidelines

The Independent Music Publishers International Forum (IMPF) has responded to the growing debate surrounding AI-generated songs emulating artists’ voices by releasing a set of ethical guidelines for AI developers. Backed by 200 independent music publishing companies globally, these principles aim to establish a more transparent collaboration between indie publishers and AI tech firms.

The IMPF, whose members include Anthem Entertainment, Angry Mob Music, and Reservoir, presented its stance on AI during the second IMPF Global Music Entrepreneurial and Creative Industry Summit. This initiative aligns with the Human Artistry Campaign, which unites over 150 organisations to safeguard human culture and artistry against the potential erosion by AI.

The four core principles outlined in the IMPF’s guidelines emphasise the ethical use of music in AI training processes. Firstly, strict adherence to intellectual property and copyright laws for all involved parties is crucial. Secondly, maintaining comprehensive records of musical and literary works used in machine learning is advocated. Thirdly, AI-generated music should be labelled as such to maintain transparency. Finally, a clear distinction between human and technical creation is promoted.

The IMPF encourages all stakeholders in AI applications to secure explicit permission for music usage during machine training. This approach underscores the importance of socially responsible practices by documenting the music used during the training process.

Their new campaign expands upon its previous efforts to address market catalogue concentration and the principle of 100% licensing. These AI guidelines align with global discussions on AI ethics, such as the European Union’s draft negotiating mandate for what could become the world’s first AI rules.
